“Once we enter into self-pity, we don’t see straight anymore; the mirrors have been placed at such an angle that all sight of our blessings has been blocked off, leading to spiritual amnesia.” What is your response to this statement? Have you ever fallen into “spiritual amnesia”?
(low bar) Was there something you coveted as a child that a friend had that made your heart ache for it? (higher bar) What is something as an adult that you have coveted?
“What marks this sin (covetousness) out from the others is that it’s a matter of the heart. If I steal, or if I make a god out of Gold, or if I commit murder, well, these things are concrete, measurable, and physical acts. Not so coveting, which happens invisibly. I can appear to be the most righteous and humble person imaginable, and yet my heart can be torn up inside, raging with covetousness.” What is your response to this statement? Have you ever thought about coveting being an invisible heart condition?
Have you experienced or witnessed someone get passed over for a raise or promotion? Someone else was put out ahead or above that seemed less deserving? Have you seen or been affected by favoritism where something in your stirred when you encountered it?
