Matthew 5:23-24 (NIV) “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.”

Matthew 5:41-42 (NIV) “If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.”

Matthew 6:17 (NIV) “When you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

Good stewardship is an act of worship. John Mark Comer lists his top twelve principles that are good to put into practice. Journal about your reaction to each one. Is this practice practical? Doable? Crazy? Impossible?

Before you buy something, ask yourself, What is the true cost of this item?

  1. Before you buy, ask yourself: By buying this, am I oppressing the poor or harming the earth?

  2. Never impulse buy. (Every item stocked within a few feet of the checkout at the store is an impulse purchase.)

  3. When you do buy, opt for fewer, better things.

  4. When you can, share.

  5. Get into the habit of giving things away.

  6. Live by a budget.

  7. Learn to enjoy things without owning them.

  8. Cultivate a deep appreciation for creation.

  9. Cultivate a deep appreciation for the simple pleasures.

  10. Recognize advertising for what it is - propaganda. Call out the lie.

  11. Lead a cheerful, happy revolt against the spirit of materialism.
